Emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants (Omicron and Delta) have scrambled researchers to think again on existing vaccine, Whether these are still effective against new variants of SARS-CoV-2.

Some sources suggests, New variants may have direct and severe impact on our lungs.

According to research conducted by Yale’s Akiko Iwasaki, the Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor of Immunobiology, Nasal vaccines have proven to be more effective and provides better protection against viral viruses than Systematic Immunization i.e. injection based vaccines do not.

She added, Best way tackle virus is to stop it when it tries to enter. Therefore Nasal Vaccines are better at preventing SARS-CoV-2 virus entering in to the lungs.

Mucous Membrane plays a vital role in forming defense system. Mucous Membranes are very effective against food-born pathogens and air born pathogens.
They stops pathogens from entering body but some cases this are challenged. In such scenario this barrier tissues produces a type of cells which secrets Immunoglobin A (IgA) antibodies.

As studies says, The role of IgA in intestinal area is too significant but its effectivity against pathogens is still not clear.

Scientists have developed Protein-based vaccines working very similar to IgA. This vaccines are immunized against pathogens through Systematic Immunization and Nasal Vaccines.

Later, Scientists vaccinated Mice with it. Then Mice were exposed to some influenzas. The mice performed very well which was injected Intranasally. Nasal Vaccines were not only effective against pathogens but also it protected mice from Flu strains.

Currently, Scientists are using this model on animals. Both the vaccines (Systematic Immunization and Nasal Vaccine) shown signs of antibodies, But it was only nasal vaccines which allowed IgA secretion into the Lungs.
